The Hot Corner

Martínez’s Abysmal Outing

Pedro Martínez has run out of time. The playoffs will begin in less than one week, and Martínez, once the Mets’ probable starter for Game 1, acknowledged after his disappointing performance in the 13-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves Wednesday night that he may not be available at all for the first round.
“The way I’m looking right now, I don’t think Willie would have a tough decision deciding who’s going to pitch Game 1,” Martínez said of Manager Willie Randolph, after allowing seven runs in two and two-third innings. “Obviously I’m not 100 percent. I don’t feel healthy and comfortable. And I’m not getting better quickly. I’m going to continue to be patient and give what I have.”
Saying that he did not feel loose at all this week, Martínez complained afterward of stiffness in his right calf muscle. Without that foundation, Martínez said he is barely himself. He does not have command. He does not have confidence. He does not have his mystique. Asked if he expected to pitch during the playoffs, Martínez said, “I’m not confident, but I’m not going to be negative about it either. I’m just going to work, work, work, work, work and work.”
Martínez has rehabilitated his injury in the major leagues when, in a perfect world, he said, he should have been gradually building up strength in the minors. He has thrown only 11 2/3 innings since Aug. 14, when he strained his calf in a start in Philadelphia, and has allowed 20 earned runs during that span.
In all on Wednesday, Martínez allowed eight hits, including back-to-back homers, two walks and one strikeout that left him at 2,998 for his career. Reaching the 3,000-strikeout milestone will have to wait until 2007. We hope.
